You're A Girl And Like To Do What?

Grand Narrative Theory has opened our eyes to gender stereotypes. Explain what gender stereotypes are to you. Share a specific time where you may have used a gender stereotype against a person or someone used one against you. What other gender stereotypes have the characters of The Hunger Games broken?

  1. For example when Katniss goes hunting. People usually think that girl should just clean, cook and take care of the little one but a girl can pretty much do what ever a guy can do.

    1. I agree with you because I like to hunt and I know girls who like to hunt, so not only boys hunt. I hate it when people use gender stereotypes. I think the fact that the Hunger games is a wide lens story due to Katniss and Peeta makes it really interesting.

    2. I agree with you because if a guy always say a girl should be in the kitchen that is wrong because a girl can do pretty much what a guy can do because if they actually sit down and commit to yourself that you will do it en a girl can do what a guy can do and a guy can do what a girl can do.

    3. I agree sheyann . I think your right when you say that girls can do anything a guy can do.

  2. What gender stereotypes are to me are things people say a certain gender can't do.A time I used a gender stereotype was when my mom, step dad and me went to the gun range and I thought my mom couldn't do it and she was pretty good at it.Some of the. Stereotypes Katniss broke were that she hunted and that she overpowered and outsmarted a lot of people in the games including Cato. Some stereotypes Peeta broke were that he couldn't and has never hunted a day in his life and he was a cake decorator.

    1. Gender stereotypes defined as irrelevant and inapplicable by the grand narrative theory, as societal roles are constantly morphing and developing, are restrictive views of genders that define the "appropriate" actions of each gender, despite what they are and how they may vary in actuality. People have often used gender stereotypes against me, usually at younger ages when personal opinion is influenced by bias as a result of being naive, in which elders with more narrow-minded views and children of my age assumed that I was not intelligent or skilled, or as much of that as a boy, because I was a girl. Gender roles are consistently broken throughout the hunger games, mainly with Katniss being the enclosed, unemotional individual who is the main provider for her family, along with the fact that Peeta is the opposite. These character attributes break gender bias.

  3. I'm a girl so many stereotypes used against me is that all girls are girlie girls and they can't play sports, all girls should just stay home and cook and clean. Stereotypes are hurtful and almost never the truth all though they are hard not to use. Whenever I see a lonely woman that doesn't appear to,have a family of her own or a husband, I think she has lots of cats and lives in a small apartment. Katniss is a girl, people expect her to stay at home and do chores when the reality is she hunts illegally. You would think all teenage boys don't have feelings and are very strong but Peeta crys when he is choosen for the reaping.

    1. Jordan, I totally agree with you because your right, just because we're girls doesn't mean we can't play sports I mean most people expect us girls to do all the work and look all pretty but no some girls like to be athletic and go hard..

    2. I agree with you so much Jordan. It's wrong for people to say that woman should stay home and clean. When there are woman sitting down alone you do suppose they are lonely but you don't know how their lives are at home. Katniss is nothing like that she is strong and even though she doesn't have a little boyfriend doesn't mean she cant have somebody on her mind. Boys aren't as strong and tuff as Jordan said, they can have a sensitive part to them. When Peeta was at the Reaping he was crying in the audience.

    3. Jordan you are so right people should never judge a person on what they look like or what sex they are

  6. I think a gender stereotype is a person that say because of your gender you can't do this. For example a lot of boys say that girls can't do this but really they are great at something. One time when I was tossing the football with my friends one of my friends sister came out and said that she wanted to play and I thought that she wasn't going to be able to do it but she was actually pretty good so we let her stay and play. I think the characters in hunger games broke gender stereotypes was when the girl from Catos district throw the knife really good.

Bubbling love the book I'm going to buy the others!!

    1. I agree because as you said some girls are good at what boys do and some boys are good at what girls do. For example Peeta is a baker, most boys say only girls bake cakes, bread, etc.

  7. I think that the way people talk about girls and how they should be things like housewives, and how they should cook, clean, take care of the kids and do most of the work while men think they do so much when they just go to work, bring
some money and expect things like food on the table the kids being well trained and everything else like the shopping, laundry and other things being taken care of. I am not saying this is how all men do because not all guys do that. A time that someone used the gender stereo type on me is on the day of Christmas. My mom was cooking slot of food being we had our relatives coming over. So my sister and I had to help cook (which we were ok with) but the problem was that we also had to clean. I mean cleaning is not a bad thing it's just that my mom, sister and I have been cooking and because my mom was tired she made my sister and I clean all by ourselves. While my brothers sat there and played games and watched movies and when we told them to come and clean they were like "you guys should like cleaning, because you are girls you don't have to get mad." that made me so mad because I had to do the dishes and sweep the floor while my sister cleaned the table, and counters while my brothers did little things like take the trash out (they did help my mom out with things, but that was only to reach things in the cabinet that we couldn't). Other stereo types that were broken in the hunger games is "boys should be the one hunting" Katniss broke that stereo type because she was the woMAN in the family, or "when it comes to a competition boys should care about no one but themselves" Peeta broke that rule at the tracker jacket event when he came back to save Katniss and fought Cato to protect her.

I LOVED THE BOOK, IT WAS AMAZING!!!

    1. I disagree with that statement because men get the job done a lot faster than girls so they would bring home more money. So while the men are out working and making money the girls should be home cleaning the house and taking care of the kids.

      Delete
    2. Jon I disagree with your statement because that's not what Mary Jane is saying, she's saying that while her brothers just sat around doing nothing , the girls were doing all the work. Even though they asked them to help her brothers said no. And it's not that boys get it done faster, everyone is different, some are slower than others but that's not the point, girls shouldn't have to do all the work just because it's a stereotype.

  8. I believe as a girl that plenty of people going into this book without reading or watching the movie, there thoughts were that Katniss was a girl. That is okay because she does what a man does to provide for her family. Which would most likely mean that there is not a father figure in her life that would do that for her so it makes plenty of sense in my opinion. However, Katniss does this illegally with Gale which could lead to something bad like getting beaten. But she does what is best for her family, which I agree with. A man or a women can do whatever they would want to do if it makes them happy, which is all that matters!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree because it's important for Katniss to take the lead and provide for her family since her father is no longer their to do so. And she must really care for her family like you said to be willing to get beaten for providing food for her family.

      Delete
    2. Yeah,I agree with you Linnea, normally you would think a guy would take over but when a girl does it many people wouldn't expect it. She also does a lot of other things you would expect a man to do like fishing, gathering, and hunting. Normally a girl would clean something, that's how everyone thinks but they can be wrong sometimes.

      Delete
  9. I feel that both Katniss broke the stereotype that girls are weak and should only work in the house because she literally puts food on the table she hunts and provides for her family since there is no man in the house she had to take that role. Also Peeta broke the stereotype that men do all the hard work because he's a baker wont kill and can never hunt.

    1. I agree with you Brian E. because still lots of people still fall into the box of that stereotype but in the Hunger Games Katniss breaks that boundary by hunting for her family.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you Richie. Many people think it should be the girls who should cook or bake, and the men who hunt. The hunger games effectively breaks this stereotype, and so does real life. While I do like to participate In archery, I also like to bake like Peeta does. Along with this, I've seen women who do very manly things, like one time when I saw a woman mining for gold.

  10. To me, gender stereotypes are when people put other people in a box and think that boys have to live up to certain standards in life and girls have to live up to certain standards to, although the to genders standards are extremely different. I use stereotypes on my sisters sometimes because they have some poor table manners and girls are supposed to act proper. Katniss has broken the stereotype that girls are pleasant and stay home when she goes out and hunts.

  11. What I think about gender stereotypes is when a boy or girl tells you can't do what they can do because your either a boy or girl. Like when my little sister asked if she could play football with my friends and I said no this is a boys sport. Katniss broken a lot of gender stereotypes cause she was a hunter and she didn't care if she got dirty. Peeta broken some gender stereotypes cause he was a cake baker and never went hunting in his life.

  12. To me gender stereotypes Is when people get discriminated against because of there gender. For example when my little sister wanted to play Nerf with me and my friends she was told no because she is a girl and we thought she would get hurt playing.

    ReplyDelete
  13. When stereotypes were used against me people told I couldn't do that because girls do it or it's not manly. Some people were telling me that they wouldn't be my friend because of the things I did, but I didn't care because I like doing what I want to do. On time when I used stereotype against someone when my mom started playing basketball, I thought she wouldn't be able to do it but she ended up being pretty good.

I agree with you.I think when people stereotype it's always negative .i think a boy can do girl sports and a girl can do boy sports and the opposite gender might be better at the sport then someone else could ever be you just have to put your mind to it and don't listen to what the others say .

  14. When I think of gender stereotypes I think of girls having to stand up straight, have their nails done perfectly, hair fabulous, and everything fashionably up to date. And boys doing all the dirty work like dealing with pests or providing for the family. But Katniss provides for her family an she's a girl. For the first chapter you can't even tell she's a girl! For example when I told my parents I wanted to play Football, they said that's a boys sport. But anyone can do it. Even Peeta doesn't fit the usual stereotypes. He decorates cakes and has never even been hunting before.

  15. What I think about gender stereotypes is when some one says boys can't cook and when someone says that girls can't hunt and katniss brakes this gender stereotype because she goes hunting and doesn't complain when she gets hurt or when she gets dirty but she also follows

  19. I think stereotypes is when people are looked upon by their gender like some people say girls are delicate but I've done things that broke some peoples bones but I came out unscathed like when I fell down the stairs at my house some people would sprain or brake their leg but all I would get is a bruise at most and another was wen I was learning how to use a bow and arrow there were a few who said I couldnt because I was a girl but I was able to learn but it's been a while since I last used my bow.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree Alexis, that many people in our society view girls as being e delicate ones compared to the boys, who are viewed to be more strong and bold. But I have found that in life nowadays that you can't really relate girls to the stereotypes of others. For example, in the Hunger Games, Katniss is known to be a good hunter, good with weapons, and survived the Games but boys think that girls are very fragile and weak and shouldn't be messing with weapons. These gender stereotypes have been broken by so many people.

  20. Stereotypes should not define people. A women doesnt have to be in the kitchen while the man is at work. Once when me and my friend John were at my house when he offered to make lunch but I didn't think he could but he did and it was really good.

Katniss does many Inge that people would think a girl shouldn't do like hunt. But she does any way.

  21. When i think of a gender stereotype, I think of someone having a set opinion about someone based upon their gender and what they do. By this I mean, someone being gender stereotypical may say "Ewww, why are you so muddy, your supposed to be clean and frilly like a normal girl." . A time when I've used a gender stereotype against someone else was one time while at my friends house, when my friends were running around tackling each other. Since one of them was a girl, i said "For a girl, your getting pretty rough n' tumble." . Along with this, there were a few stereotypes being broken in the hungergames too. One of those things was when Peeta cried on the way to the capitol, while Katniss stayed emotionless. Normally, you'd figure it would be vise versa with Katniss crying, rather than Peeta.

  22. There are a lot of things people think girls should do and what boys should do but most of them are wrong there is a lot people don't know about me some think I am perfect and a Barbie doll but I am far from it when I am with my dad I am way different I'll go out side and play In the mud or go ride a four wheeler I am way different then people think so many people expect on thing and they will get the opposite so all I am saying is that don't judge a book by its cover and don't judge a person by there exterior .

  23. Gender stereotypes is when society believes that males are the more superior gender. Men doing the hard work, putting food on the table, supporting the household; and women would stay at home as housewives to cook, clean, and take care of the house and children. Once, we were playing "tag" at recess when I was younger, and a boy said he would be "it" because he could run faster and that "boys were simply better than girls". Well after he said that, all the girls starting yelling and arguing with the boys, so we ended up playing two separate games of "tag".

In the Hunger Games, while Peeta and Katniss are in the cave living, their gender roles stereotypes are reversed. Peeta is the one who stays in the cave, while Katniss goes out hunting their food, tending to Peeta's wounds, and risking her life to go to the cornucopia to get Peeta's medicine. She does all the "dirty" work even when Peeta feels better after the medicine, she defends them both, and she makes the most decisions of how to keep them both alive. Peeta just follows Katniss around, and helps with water or gathering roots.

  24. To me I think gender stereotypes are when you going into being new school .for examples it's like when Peeta likes baking cakes and cooking but if he was in old school fashion he would.be hunting , playing baseball, playing basketball . For example like me I love playing sports and falling but if I was doing it old school I would not be playing hard sports wouldn't like falling get nails done and all that. Good stuff.

    1. I agree with you. I think that Peeta likes ding cakes and he should be doing something different like hunting. I think that katniss and Peeta should change places because katniss dose boy things and Peeta dose girl things. I also agree with you that girls now love to do sports and get dirty but in old school you sold be doing nails and making food.

    1. Madi, I disagree because your basically explaining the stereotype thing...it doesn't matter if boys like pink , because people think pink is for JUST girls, it's a nice color i understand them how they feel though because things girls like are very interesting to boys and tomboys are girls that like boy stuff there's no point of saying these things because people are interested in what they think, it's life. You will see .. Gays , bisexuals, lesbian and those are good example because of what they like....tomboys are girls who like BOY stuff , it's ok on how they want to live and gay boys are boys that like girl stuff...sometimes.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you madi girls shouldn't be all tough and things they should act like there a girl and get the things you said but then guys should be the opposite they should be tough strong and they should play sports and get all dirty.

    3. Maid, I agree with what you said and that is true about them. That is the typical stereotype between them. Question, do you think those are good stereotypes? Are they a reliable way to define a person?

      Delete
  26. A gender stereotypes is where girls do softball and boys do football. Someone told me that I could not do boy things like go outside and run and get dirty but I can just because I'm a girl dose not mean anything. Now in the book when Peeta is making cakes that's a girl thing and I guy is doing it. Another example is when Katniss is in the huger games she's fighting for her life and killing people. That's not something that girls do.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Gender stereotypes are when a specific gender is depicted a certain way and expected to act accordingly. Usually girls are supposed to act all girly and not be as athletic as males. This is not always true, most boys like to think that and it angers girls. Stereotypes are not always accurate and because of diversity, they are almost always broken. I remember when in elementary school, the boys used to laugh at the girls and tell us that we couldn't play with them because we were girls. When that happened we had to eventually just start our own game right next to them. I'm an athlete, I play basketball, and I remember being offended extremely by how boys would laugh at us. I know I got angry. I think though, when they eventually saw we knew how to play and could; they let us join in. Even if they were unfair . Now though, we have no problem.
Katniss definitely broke the stereotype for girls. She spent her days hunting in the woods and fending for her family . Which is not expected for girls to take part in. Usually , the father would do the jobs Katniss takes on. Katniss did learn everything from her father and spend her days with him. With Peeta, Katniss still does the more dangerous work , which the boy would be expected to do. While Peeta gathers, Katniss hunts. Katniss though, has more of tough deminor while Peeta is much more emotional. With their actions and behaviors they both break gender stereotypes.

    1. I completely agree. I remember, when we would spend hours outside your house playing in the dirt and getting dirty. Completely breaking the gender stereotype. We didn't let it get in our way. We did what we like, as does Peeta and Katniss. Katniss, as you said does the dirty work(hunting) while Peeta gathered.

  28. Gender stereotypes to me are when boys or girls say just because you are a different gender means yo cant do things that some one else can do. For example when boys say that they are stronger than girls that's not true because some girls are much more stronger than boys, I think it's wrong for boys or girls to say that each other cant do things just because of there gender. What I would do if I was stuck in that situation is I would just walk away from that person or just ignore them. The time I used gender stereotypes was when I told my mom that she could never beat me in playing the wii because most girls really don't play video games they just like to talk about getting there nails done or about boys, but my mom proved me wrong because she actually beat me and I was shocked about that.

    1. Jordan, I completely agree with you for a couple of reasons. 1, a lot of guys doubt how strong I am and how fast I can go which is really offensive because I know I'm pretty fast and I'm fairly strong. Another reason that I agree with you is because some girls are stronger than boys and they don't flaunt about it in other peoples faces. I also agree that people shouldn't be stereotyped based on gender or anything. That is why I agree with you.

  29. I believe gender stereotypes are when people say that when girls shouldn't hunt if they were raised with that background and family let them hunt it's like guys that dance or do cheer leading if they like and are good at it go ahead and do it.

  30. I think that boys and girls can do anything they want to. Some guys say girls can't do what guys do. I think that is not true becuase girl can do anything a guy could do. The hunger games is a perfect example because Kattniss can do everything Gale and Petta can do she can hunt she could put food on the table she could trade she even know how to kill and use a bow. This is why I think gender doesn't matter because every one can do anything they want if they put they mind to it

  31. Gender stereotypes is when society is demeaning to a certain gender. For instance, girls aren't allowed to play football as boys with Ballet. If a guy were to do ballet he would be referred to as a fruit. If a girl were to play football she would be referred to as a Tomboy. This may hurt their feelings because you have no idea how long they spend in the bathroom every morning, debating on whether or not they should continue doing the things they enjoy. When I was younger I was a bit of a Tomboy. I would make mud pies, climb trees... I'd even wear my brothers clothes! My own sister would make fun of me! I remember how angry I was, but I still loved to go outside and get dirty! I still do somewhat, but not as much. I still have that slight "Tomboy" characteristic in myself. I absolutely adore trucks. I always remind my dad that for my 16th birthday I want a burgundy F-150. And a stereotypical person, shouldn't make me or anyone else change our opinions on what we like and what we don't like.

Katniss really shows us that it's okay to be yourself, and not have to fit that girly appearance. She hunts for her family, keeping food on the table. This is typically a "guy job". She also has that "Suck-it-up" attitude. Peeta is the exact opposite. Baking cakes. Working in the Kitchen and doing "girl jobs" or so they say. He's a lot more emotional then most guys and is open and honest about his feelings. He does what he likes. And doesn't let gender stereotyping get In the way.

    1. I agree with Caroline! I always wanted to play sports with the boys, and get dirty by playing in the dirt and picking up earthworms. Girls always made fun of me, which got me thinking I should wear pretty clothes and participate in the 'drama' that was so pointless to me. Boys thought the same thing, that I shouldn't be able to run fast and I should look well groomed. Boys were supposed to play sports and not talk to girls with respect as some people thought. Katniss and Peeta break both of these as Katniss is a hunter a plays to roles that a man or father should. Peeta is respectful and he decorates cakes. Just because you're a certain gender doesn't mean you should be in the certain 'boxes' we are placed in.

  32. I think a girl can do anything a boy can do for example gale can hunt and people would judge Katniss by her cover but really she's a girl that doesn't do what a regular girl would do she hunts and brings food to the family and that's a boys job

  33. I honestly can't stay inside my house on a weekend for an hour. My family is the same. We go outside, do barbecues, or when its cold go up north or down south. Usually people portray boys as the only ones who can play sports and have fun. Not true. Girls are just as good (and even BETTER) in most sports. And then the phrase "you throw like a girl" where did that come from? I may not be able to throw well but I know a lot of girls who know how to. Some people are good at something's and some aren't
In the Hunger Games Katniss hunts, usually boys are the ones who hunt or help the family but not anymore! Most people also portray fathers as paying the bills because women "don't know how" to use money! I mean seriously. Also did you know in 75% of households the mother pays the bills. This is not how people would think of it though. Just like Katniss brings everything home for the family

  34. Katniss is different from most girls. She hunts, trades, and kills a career. Not many people can say they killed a career. A wise man once said men should carry guns and women should carry babies. Katniss breaks this rule, because she goes hunting in the woods and supplies for her family like the ideal husband/dad does.

  35. The type of stereotypes i think of are the ones who say that since your a different gender so you can't do stuff. When I was little there wasn't a softball team where I lived so I went to the boys little league with my dad and asked to play on one of there teams. The coach said no and that I would never make it with the boys because I wasn't tough enough. So me and my dad left and talked to another coach and he let me play. When I was playing I was great and all the boys congratulated me. The other coach was mad and jealous so he tried getting me on his team and we turned him down.

In the hunger games there were stereotypes that said Katniss should be at home and making dinner and cleaning not be out hunting.

  36. Stereotypes to me means that a girl and a guy can do the same thing without being judged. People should not say that a girl should be in the kitchen and a guy should be at work. For example my sister is at work all the time while her husband is home taking care of my niece. So I think that people should stop saying the girls should be in the kitchen my opinion honestly guys should be in the kitchen. Also my dad and stepmom both work and make money and the also both cook dinner and clean the house

  37. I think a stereotype is suppose to basically define there gender like usually guys are suppose play football or baseball or basketball and be buff and tough and have lots of girlfriends because they think it is "cool" and a girl is suppose to do what the guys say and be an cheerleader for them. Just like in the games that when peeta bakes for his father they think only girls can bake and that isn't true. If you have ever seen long shots it is really an inspiring movie it is based on a girl liking football but doesn't try out because she is afraid and when she does she is a star player. At the end I want to say we are all humans we all have 2 feet 2 eyes 2 arms 2 hands and stuff so just because we have different personalities or color of hair or your race we are all human and what one human can do another human can do.

  38. Gender stereotypes are just someone's opinion of what they think a girl or boy should do.an example of a gender stereotype is when my parents say girls shouldn't play football but I do it all the time with my friends. A time when there was a gender stereotype in the book would be in the beginning when katniss was out hunting. The kids in our class who never read the book or seen the movie thought she was a girl until she said her name was katniss.

  39. Gender stereotype to me is when a person or persons puts another person into a "box" based on what they do or say. Especially for me being a girl and all I get stereotyped a lot because I play a lot of sports such as soccer and I also play trumpet. The one time I told somebody that I play trumpet and soccer they gave me a look saying seriously.....and it didn't help that I was wearing a dress. The one time I stereotyped somebody was when I was at 6 Flags and I saw a guy wearing short shorts, flip flops, earrings, and a multicolored haircut. He immediately came off to me as gay. It wasn't an offensive thought it was just a natural born thing to judge people based on looks. After about an hour or so after seeing him for the first time I saw him again holding hands and acting like a couple with another girl. It completely shocked me. A time when I gender stereotyped someone in the Hunger Games was when I read about Peeta icing the cakes and I thought that's a little weird a boy icing cakes and then I thought if that's what he likes to do let him do it. I believe gender stereotyping somebody is an unfair thing but it's a natural born instinct which can't be helped unless you work at it.

  40. To me, gender stereotypes are those jokes with your friends about having your girlfriend/wife make you a sandwich or her telling you to pay the bills. That is categorizing them into what they do. I've probably used a gender stereotype before when I'm joking around or jokingly making fun of one of my friends. I'm not going to share them on here because someone may find it offensive. I think we are helping break it because we're turning the stereotype into a joke. In the hanger Games, they've switched our generalizations between both sexes. Katniss tends to do masculine acts as Peeta is more feminine.

  42. Gender stereotypes to me are when we are basically put into categories. We have to do certain things to be in the category of a girl or boy. What I mean is that girls usually aren't strong and go out doing "manly" things. When girls hunt it makes them seem like a tomboy. Also, when guys do "girly" things such as cooking and cleaning for their household, it makes them seem like they are more feminine-like. Most people take gender stereotypes as a joke, like a girl playing in mud, and a guy wearing pink and purple. I get gender sereotypes used against me a lot, but it doesn't phase me at all. I like to get dirty when I'm outside, playing in the dirt and sand, opposed to the stereotype of "girls" who are always worrying about how they look and staying clean. I also get stereotyped for all of the sports that I play. Usually, girls are supposed to stay away from sports that involve too much running and getting dirty. But I play soccer and I do swim team, but that doesn't make me a tom girl, now does it? No. In The Hunger Games, Katniss and Peeta basically switch when it comes to gender stereotypes. Katniss is the one who hunts and isn't afraid to get down and dirty. While Peeta is more towards the laying low, and he also pays more attention than boys usually do. What I mean by this is that he notices when Katniss is acting off and he cares for her a lot more than a regular guy would, especially in competition.
